Design and Technology

Curriculum Intent

At Lanchester Primary School, our Design and Technology curriculum is designed to empower children with the skills, knowledge, and creativity necessary to thrive in an increasingly complex world of technology. We aim to develop our children’s understanding of design principles, structures, mechanisms, and a diverse range of materials, including textiles, electronics, and food technology. Through engaging, hands-on learning experiences, we encourage our children to become problem solvers and innovators who can tackle real-world challenges.

Our Core Values: Ready, Respectful, Resilient

  • Ready: We prepare our children to engage actively in their learning journeys by fostering curiosity and encouraging independent thinking. Our curriculum is structured to ensure that children are ready to embrace challenges and explore new concepts in Design and Technology.

  • Respectful: We instil a sense of respect for materials, tools, and the environment, highlighting the importance of sustainability and ethical design. Children learn to appreciate the impact of their creations on the world around them, promoting a respectful attitude toward community and global issues.

  • Resilient: We understand that design and technology often involve trial and error. Our curriculum emphasises resilience by encouraging children to learn from mistakes and persist in their endeavours. We celebrate their efforts and the innovative spirit that drives them to improve and refine their designs.

Curriculum Goals and Implementation

Our curriculum structure is guided by the National Curriculum and Cornerstones (Curriculum 22) framework while also being enhanced by our unique pedagogical approaches and community partnerships. Our curriculum aims to:

  • Foster Creativity: Children are encouraged to think creatively and critically, generating original ideas and developing innovative solutions to problems.

  • Develop Practical Skills: Through a range of projects, children gain hands-on experience in designing, making, and evaluating their products. This includes working with various materials and technologies.

  • Encourage Collaboration: Design and Technology projects often involve teamwork, helping children learn the value of collaboration and effective communication.

Curriculum Structure and Enrichment

Our curriculum structure is guided by the National Curriculum and the Cornerstones (Curriculum 22) framework, with added enrichment from external organizations, including local artisans and educational workshops. This provides children with opportunities to learn from professionals in the field and to see the real-world applications of their classroom learning. We are committed to nurturing the next generation of innovators, thinkers, and problem solvers, ready to make a positive impact on the world.
