Curriculum Intent

At Lanchester Primary School, we aim to nurture a love for music and foster creativity in every learner by providing a high-quality music education. Through the adoption of the Charanga music scheme, we ensure that our children experience a consistent, progressive, and comprehensive music curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum. The Charanga scheme allows children to revisit and build upon the interrelated dimensions of music—pulse, voice, pitch, and rhythm—enabling them to develop a solid foundation in musical understanding.

Our music curriculum is designed to cultivate our three key values: Ready, Respectful, and Resilient.

  • Ready: We prepare our learners by providing them with access to a broad range of musical experiences and activities, from listening and appraising to creating, exploring, and performing. Weekly lessons in music for all children, from EYFS to Year 6, equip them with essential skills that they can build upon throughout their time at school. By integrating Charanga’s engaging resources, we foster a learning environment where children are excited to actively participate and contribute to musical learning, both individually and collaboratively.

  • Respectful: Through music, students explore different cultures, genres, and musical traditions, fostering an appreciation for diversity. Our curriculum encourages respectful listening and sharing, as well as celebrating music as a means of expression. Assemblies and performances give students the opportunity to come together as a school community, building a sense of respect for themselves, each other, and the art of music. Music is not just a subject but a vital part of our school culture, celebrated at the beginning and end of each assembly, underscoring the importance we place on unity, empathy, and collective joy.

  • Resilient: Learning music presents challenges that require perseverance and determination. Our curriculum emphasises resilience by encouraging students to practise, refine, and perform. Musical activities are designed to develop students’ confidence, allowing them to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them. Through the process of listening, appraising, creating, and performing, learners build the resilience needed to overcome challenges, fostering skills that are transferable to other areas of life and learning.

Our curriculum provides opportunities to link music to other areas of learning, enhancing childrens' understanding of cross-curricular themes. By integrating project-based learning where appropriate, we offer a rich context for musical exploration. The Charanga scheme ensures that all lessons are engaging, interactive, and reflective of childrens’ individual and collective growth in musical knowledge and skills.
