Personal, Social and Health Education

Curriculum Intent

At Lanchester, we recognise the importance of Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education as a fundamental part of our children’s overall development. PSHE is woven throughout our curriculum and provides a vital framework for pupils to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attributes they need to lead healthy, safe, and fulfilling lives. Our curriculum aims to prepare our children for the challenges of the future, both personally and socially.

Our intent for PSHE education at Lanchester is to foster an environment where children can thrive by promoting the three R’s: Ready, Respectful, and Resilient. These core values are integral to our school culture and underpin our approach to teaching PSHE:

  • Ready: We aim to equip our children with the readiness to engage in their learning, to understand themselves and others, and to be prepared for life's challenges.

  • Respectful: We instil the importance of respect for oneself and others, promoting empathy, understanding, and celebrating diversity within our community and beyond.

  • Resilient: We encourage our pupils to develop resilience, enabling them to navigate obstacles and setbacks with confidence and a positive mindset.

Jigsaw Scheme

To deliver our PSHE curriculum effectively, we have adopted the Jigsaw Programme. This comprehensive scheme offers a structured approach to teaching PSHE, focusing on relevant learning experiences that empower children to navigate their world. Through the Jigsaw Programme, we strive to:

  • Develop Emotional Literacy: Jigsaw lessons place a strong emphasis on emotional awareness, allowing children to recognize, express, and manage their emotions effectively.

  • Build Resilience: By exploring themes of perseverance and problem-solving, children learn to face challenges with courage and determination.

  • Nurture Mental and Physical Health: Our PSHE curriculum promotes healthy lifestyles, encouraging pupils to prioritise their well-being and that of others.

  • Mindfulness Practices: Incorporating mindfulness into our lessons helps children enhance their concentration and focus, fostering a positive learning environment.

Curriculum Delivery

PSHE education at Lanchester is delivered through engaging and relevant lessons that address the moral, social, and cultural issues our children encounter as they grow up. Our curriculum encompasses:

  • Personal Development: Teaching children about self-awareness, self-esteem, and personal goals.

  • Social Skills: Encouraging collaboration, communication, and conflict resolution among peers.

  • Health Education: Providing knowledge on physical health, mental well-being, and healthy relationships.

  • Economic Understanding: Introducing concepts of financial literacy and responsible citizenship.

Whole-School Approach

We believe in a whole-school approach to PSHE, integrating its principles into all aspects of school life. Our staff are committed to modelling the values of being Ready, Respectful, and Resilient, ensuring that our children receive consistent messages about the importance of these values in their daily lives.
