Religious Education

Curriculum Intent

At Lanchester Primary, we believe Religious Education (RE) plays a vital role in shaping the personal and academic development of our children. In an increasingly diverse society, RE enables our children to foster empathy, respect, and a deeper understanding of the world around them. Aligned with our core values—Ready, Respectful, and Resilient—our RE curriculum is designed to promote inclusivity, celebrate diversity, and encourage an appreciation for the multi-faith population within our school and the broader community.

Our RE curriculum offers an accessible and inclusive approach, representing the six major world religions: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism. Delivered through the exploration of significant religious festivals and celebrations, each year group engages with six RE projects that build knowledge and understanding of these diverse faiths and their customs. By doing so, we ensure that our children are Ready to engage with the broader world with confidence and curiosity.

Celebrations of various religious festivals not only enhance knowledge but also enrich the well-being of our children. Through these celebrations, children experience joy, connection, and a sense of community, enabling them to grow into Respectful individuals who value and honour differences. We take pride in our school’s diversity and inclusivity, and it is essential that the festivals and traditions celebrated by the families in our community are also honoured within our school environment. This approach allows our children to explore universal themes such as love, belonging, and the shared human experience.

Each RE project is designed to build upon previous learning, fostering a progressive understanding of each religion’s key people, teachings, beliefs, and practices. By exploring these themes, our children are encouraged to develop Resilience in their beliefs and understanding, equipped to approach life’s deeper questions with an open mind and a strong sense of self. The curriculum is thoughtfully sequenced to ensure that knowledge is cumulative, allowing children to build upon prior understanding and appreciate the richness of each religious tradition over time.
