Art and Design

Curriculum Intent

At Lanchester Primary School, we recognise that art and design are essential components of a well-rounded education, providing our children with opportunities to express their individuality and creativity. Aligned with the National Curriculum and supported by Curriculum Maestro, our art and design curriculum is designed to foster a learning environment that is Ready, Respectful, and Resilient.

  • Ready: We prepare our children to engage meaningfully with art by equipping them with foundational skills and knowledge across various artistic disciplines. Our curriculum incorporates the National Curriculum's key areas of study, allowing children to explore diverse techniques, materials, and processes. We encourage them to be ready to experiment, take creative risks, and develop their unique artistic voices.
  • Respectful: We instil a culture of respect for oneself, others, and the environment through the study of art. Our curriculum encourages appreciation for diverse cultures, artistic styles, and historical contexts, highlighting how art can foster empathy and understanding. By collaborating with peers and sharing feedback, children learn to value different perspectives and the communal nature of artistic expression.
  • Resilient: We promote resilience by encouraging children to embrace challenges and learn from setbacks. Our curriculum focuses on developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, helping them understand that art is a process of exploration and growth. This resilience prepares them to navigate not only their artistic endeavours but also the broader challenges they may face throughout their education.

As children progress through Lanchester Primary School, they are provided with opportunities to deepen their understanding of art and design. They explore how art reflects and shapes culture, history, and identity, making connections to their own lives and the world around them. By integrating the National Curriculum with Curriculum Maestro, we aim to inspire a lifelong appreciation for the arts, nurturing confident, creative individuals who are prepared to make meaningful contributions to society.
