Writing

Curriculum Intent

At Lanchester Primary, our children embody our core values of Ready, Respectful, and Resilient in every step of the writing journey. They approach each task ready to engage, explore, and express their ideas with creativity and confidence. By writing for different audiences and purposes across a range of genres, our children learn to adapt their style while staying true to their own voices. Their learning demonstrates not only grammatical accuracy and a rich vocabulary but also a strong command of language, allowing them to write with clarity, coherence, and flair.

Our commitment to high expectations and a consistent, supportive approach encourages children to be respectful of the writing process, taking the time to develop fluent, legible handwriting, accurate spelling, and thoughtful editing skills. We also believe in the importance of writing beyond English lessons, and our children are encouraged to apply their skills across the curriculum, with evidence of their writing in all subjects.

The Talk for Writing approach is central to our curriculum, enabling children to plan, read, and write independently. Through this approach, they become resilient writers, learning to internalise and utilise the structures and language patterns unique to written language. By teaching them the ‘language of writing,’ distinct from spoken language, they gain the tools to craft imaginative and impactful pieces. Talk for Writing equips children with the knowledge and confidence to take ownership of their writing, using and developing their skills across a variety of contexts.
